A basic overview of the Roothack Wargames game play and sign-ups
Hermes(the Gateway):
Hermes is the gateway to most Roothack wargames boxes. Generally, you log into Hermes from wherever you are, and access the wargame boxes through that shell(login).
Sirens (solo games):
The Sirens are a pair of boxes set up for users to get used to the Linux environment, learn basic administration errors, and to learn basic program exploitation.
Old Style Team Wargames:
In the old style team games, each team (generally 4-5 teams of 3-6 people) gets root access to their own box on the Roothack network. The game starts with the Grace Period (usually about 24 hours) when teams are not allowed to actively attack other teams boxes or sniff traffic. This is the time for each team to upgrade/update their boxes, install extra programs/etc for securing and attacking, etc. After the Grace Period, Open Season begins during which teams are allowed to attack each others boxes, ultimate goal being rooting opponent teams boxes. Open Season typically ends when all boxes have been rooted by one team or there is a stalemate after about a week.
New Style Team Wargames:
In the new style team games, all the teams are given the same set of questions to begin. The teams must find the answers to these questions in order to get access to the gateway to the Roothack network. After the team has access to the Roothack network, their goal is to exploit as many of the boxes/services that are set up for the games as possible. Successfully exploiting/rooting services generally give you access to a hash/flag/key that is submitted to the website and gives your team credit(points) for the successful exploitation.
During all team games, documentation (and write-ups, whitepapers, etc) are encouraged (and occasionally required) so others may learn.
Joining Teams for Team Games:
(will be updated when team games module is up next)
Team games are generally only set up and played once every few months at this point in time. I believe you can only create teams or join the Free Agent list starting about a week before a scheduled game.
